5 Kids Sports Injuries You May Not Notice

Sports are a great activity for kids to get involved in! But like many activities at younger ages, sports can be the cause of injuries that affect their growth down the road. While some injuries like a broken bone are easy to spot, some are more internal. Do you know how to spot if something is wrong with your child?

Children and teenagers have growth plates, which are areas of cartilage at the ends of long bones where bone growth occurs. And because these growth plates are open, it makes children more susceptible to injury. These plates tend to close by the time a person turns 21, so it’s important to take care of these areas of the body when able so growth isn’t stunted.

Signs of Sports Injuries in Children & Teens:

  • Swelling
  • Deformity of injured area
  • Immobility of limb or shoulders looking lopsided
  • Limping
  • Change in the athlete’s technique
